Adventurous 4-wheel driving, steep climbs, river crossings, history, gold mining and pioneering in Victoria’s High Country
This DVD features another convoy group travelling through Victoria’s magnificent High Country. Follow the travellers as they experience the pioneering and gold mining history, the mystery and intrigue of Wonnangatta Valley and enjoy the fabulous scenery of the High Country.
The trip began in Mansfield and from there it is not far to Mt Stirling and the iconic Craigs Hut. Also included are Mt Wellington, Blue Rag Range, Crooked River Goldfields Licola, Omeo and many other top spots.
The convoy also found plenty of great 4 wheel driving – into Wonnangatta Valley, down Billy Goat Bluff and along the Blue Rag Range and many other great tracks.
The Wonnangatta story represents great pioneering spirit, human hardship, mystery and intrigue. It was in the 1860s when a prospector found his way into the hidden valley and built the first hut there. In the following years, the valley became the site of a successful cattle and horse business.
Gold was discovered in the High Country in the 1850s and soon both Talbotville (on the banks of the Crooked River) and Grant (on top of the mountain) became thriving townships. Little remains of either today, except for information boards and old mine tunnels at Grant, but the Talbotville site makes for a delightful campsite.
There are many other great camping spots in the High Country, perfect for families and other travellers, with plenty of delightful campsites along rivers or near huts.
And the scenery is beautiful, from the outstanding Dimmocks Lookout, the inspiring view of the valleys and mountains from the Pinnacles to the uninterrupted panorama of Mt Wellington.
All of this is shown in the video as the convoy group enjoys their two week trip around the best of Victoria’s High Country.
